Toyota Camry Hybrid….NASCAR…..Really?

I heard about this a few weeks back and waited to comment….mostly because I don’t know how “hybrid” it is to race cars, but I guess I should be happy that NASCAR has decided to have a Toyota Camry Hybrid as the pace car for the 50th running of the Coca Cola 500.

Here is the official info from Toyota pit pass…..
TORRANCE, Calif. (April 21, 2009) — When a Toyota Camry Hybrid leads the 43-car starting field to the green flag for the 50th running of the Coca-Cola 600 (Fox, 5:00 p.m., ET) at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (LMS), it will mark the first time in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) history a hybrid vehicle will serve as the ‘official’ pace car for an entire race.

Before being approved to serve as the pace car for the upcoming May race the Camry Hybrid had to pass a NASCAR-mandated performance test. In order to qualify as a pace car for the race at LMS, a vehicle is required to reach speeds close to 100 miles per hour from a stand-by position near the exit of pit road to the time it reaches the exit of turn two, a distance of approximately one-quarter-mile.

So there it is folks, love it or think it’s a venue that is an odd combination….NASCAR and Camry Hybrid, what’s next? I guess we wait and see.

My sister just got a 2009 Prius!

So I’m very excited for my little sister, last night she made the drive down from the Greater Portland area of Maine to pick up her new Prius that she leased from us here at Acton Toyota Scion of Littleton Ma. She has owned quite a few Hondas I must admit…. but I now have done my job as a brother of selling her a Toyota. The best part is although I’m a huge fan of the Toyota Prius I wasn’t the “salesperson” of the idea. She was originally looking to purchase a used Honda Ridgeline, so we found one for her.

After weighing options between the Honda Ridgeline, Honda CRV lease or a new Rav4 lease she asked “what about a Toyota Prius?” Now I got excited for her, this is an amazing car and an easy vehicle for me to “sell.” We looked over some attractive lease figures with the lease programs available and decided a completely equipped gray Prius would be the choice to test drive. I showed her a few features, let her take it out for a ride and upon returning you could tell by the big smile on her face that this was her new car. A couple of questions and some brotherly “you need to buy snow tires” advice from me and she confirmed, “ This is my new car!”

With the 2010 Prius pre-order rush on the 2009 inventory, specials, programs and promotions are looking great. The 2009 Prius are going to sell out quickly. I’m sure we will end up in an inventory position similar to $4.00 gas prices and 6 month waiting periods of not so long ago. I’m glad she took advantage of getting a Prius now and am happy for her.

Toyota Said to Slash Prius Price in Duel With Honda (Update1)

By Doron Levin

April 20 (Bloomberg) — Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s largest automaker, will cut the base price of its Prius gas- electric hybrid model by $1,000 to $21,000, as it competes with Honda Motor Co.’s Insight, said a person familiar with the matter.

Honda introduced the Insight on March 24 with a sticker price starting at $19,800, undercutting the 2009 Prius, which starts at $22,000. Toyota will announce prices on the 2010 model tomorrow, with details about the new car tomorrow, said the person, who asked not to be named because the statement is pending.

The two hybrids were introduced more than a decade ago. Since then the Prius has led in sales, accounting for half of all such models sold in the U.S. Honda dropped the original two- seat Insight in 2006 and revived the name this year with a bigger version.

Insight’s fuel efficiency is rated at 41 miles per gallon, combined for city and highway driving, said Sage Marie, a Honda spokesman.

Prius, classified as a midsize sedan, will be rated at a combined 50 miles per gallon, said the person familiar with the price.

‘Huge Brand’

A Toyota spokesman in Japan declined a month ago to confirm or deny a Nikkei newspaper report that the automaker planned to cut the price of its older model Prius to match the price of the new Insight.

New Prius models will be available in a month; the cheaper ones not until later in the year, said the person.

Details were disclosed to a small group of Toyota dealers today at a meeting in Washington, D.C., said the person.

“Prius has become a synonym for hybrid, it’s a huge brand unto itself,” said David Fischer, a car dealer based in Troy, Michigan and owner of a Toyota franchise. “Insight will do the same for Honda. The hybrid is no longer a boutique concept, it’s becoming mainstream.”

Through the first quarter of the year Prius sold 24,277 units in the U.S., off 43 percent from a year earlier. Insight sold 569 cars in March, when it had limited time in the U.S. market.

The new Prius is the model’s third generation, billed by Toyota as bigger and more fuel-efficient.

Prius Ownership Experience

I thought explaining about how my Toyota Prius ownership experience in some ways changed my life may shed some light as to why I started this Hybrid Vehicle blog. As a longtime car salesman I have owned, driven, purchased, driven as demonstators etc….lots of cars, trucks, vans and suvs. This being said not one of them have made me pasionate enough to create a project such as NewEnglandHybrid.com except for one, the Toyota Prius.

I purchased my Prius through Toyota’s reputable and cost effective Certified Vehicle program which provides among many benefits the peace of mind that if something happened to the technology filled Prius that I would not occur the added expense of major repairs. I did use that coverage and was happy to have it, but that’s a subject in itself. Being a high mileage driver of about 35000 miles per year I spend enough time in the car to make it important to me. Also this provides me with enough time to develop likes and dislikes.

The positives of the Toyota Prius have a list that differ depending who you talk to but mine are as follows. First let me say that although an understated car this car attracts attention. The emotions sparked in the “green community” are ones of excitement and I have never had a vehicle where people are so happy to talk about it with you, whether they own one or not. As an avid snowboarder and rider of boards of all sorts, space is important. The Toyota Prius solves the usable space issue with high marks, the cargo space is huge for a vehicle this size. The gas mileage is of course debatable so I won’t give a number, but lets just say “impressive.” The maintainence costs associated with a Toyota Prius should not negatively effect your buying decision as these were also impressive. Simply said this car outperforms any vehicle I can remember driving or owning on many levels in my opinion.

I said in the begining that owning a Toyota Prius has changed my life on other levels. I’m not going to claim to be Ed Begley Jr. but I am much more environmentaly involved than I ever thought I would become. I now am interested in energy conservation, recycling, Hybrid Vehicles, organic foods etc….than I was, tenfold. The Toyota Prius makes you think about your impact on the environment and look for ways to become a better person.

2010 Prius article

For Prius, Cutting-Edge Cool is Hot New Norm
By Susan Pack of Toyota Today

To go before. To go beyond. In its third generation, the 2010 Toyota Prius builds on its eco-techno base to provide more power, more mpg and more futuristic features.

Take, for example, the optional solar moonroof that helps keep drivers from losing their cool. While the car is parked, solar panels power a ventilation fan that reduces the temperature inside. As owners approach their car, they can tamp down the temp even more by flipping on the A/C with an available key fob.

It’s the kind of option that should appeal to the technologically savvy as well as the simply sweaty. In other words, the broad customer base that Prius needs to remain the best-selling hybrid in the world.

Toyota Division Group Vice President and General Manager Bob Carter helped introduce the 2010 Toyota Prius at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 12.

“The features and performance of the new midsize 2010 Toyota Prius are superior to anything we have ever built,” Carter said. “And along with building a better car, we will make it available in more places. We plan to sell this new 2010 Toyota Prius in 80 countries worldwide, nearly twice as many as today.”

The new model arrives in U.S. showrooms this spring, equipped with a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that pumps up performance. The 2010 Toyota Prius zips from zeo to 60 mph in 9.8 seconds in internal testing, compared to 10.9 seconds for its predecessor.

Fuel efficiency also improves, thanks to advances in design and technology. An aerodynamic stretched silhouette, along with underbody covers, minimizes air resistance, reducing the drag cofficient from .26 to .25. A new exhaust heat collection system uses engin collant to extract exhaust hear, improving engine warm-up time and increasing start-up fuel economy.

A redesigned gas tank not only simplifies the fueling system but also sheds weight. In fact, the entire hybrid system weighs less.

As a result, of the changes, the new 2010 Toyota Prius is expected to get an EPA-estimated combined rating of 50 miles per gallon, four more than the current generation.

Size also shifts. While exterior dimensions are comparable to the current model, the interior is more spacious, thanks to a smaller batter control module and other space savers. The cargo area cradles three golf bags instead of two.

Of course, the 2010 Toyota Prius’ propensity for “green” goes well beyond a golf green. Plant-derived “Ecological Plastics” are used in seat cushion foam, trim and scuff plates. Then there’s the new cool exhaust gas recirculation system that cycles some exhaust gas back into the engine, reducing certain emissions. It’s another potent pairing of eco and techno that should help the 2010 Toyota Prius clean up in the expanding hybrid vehicle market.
